Brief Encounter is a classic romantic drama set in 1945 during WWII in and around the fictional Milford railway station. A married woman, with children, Laura (Celia Johnson), meets a stranger, a doctor (Trevor Howard) named Alec in the station's waiting/tea room, who kindly removes a piece of grit from her eye then leaves to catch his train. During her following shopping trips to Milford, Laura bumps into Alec and a friendship begins to develop. Soon the meetings become a fixed arrangement.

  • Alecs creepy flatmate.bet poor alec had to sleep with one eye open..

  • "I'll call you mother, you saucey upstart!"

  • ''That would never do''...... I was born in 1983 and thanks to my beautiful father, I adore this film. Thanks Dad.

  • @Deaglan56 of course its gay...its a well known fact!!

  • His mate is obviously madly in love with Alec, hence the "I wunt my latchkey back line...". Have to say, he looked very odd to say the least.

  • why do they have such annoying friends?

  • The whole story is gay. Think of the main characters as two married men and the tension they feel regarding their "forbidden love". The scene where the flat owner comes back was the scene that twigged this idea for me. The owner is obviously gay. For God's sake. Noel Coward wrote the screenplay. QED

  • Billy Wilder said that he got the idea for "The Apartment" from the scene with the friend!

  • @ptownfreddy Good point - maybe so. But he's still a creep.

  • @quornholio Yes, easily. Henreid has no charisma whasoever.
