Greta in her new wheelchair. This is her first time in the chair We think Greta has DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) Greta wants to thank Angel "Toby" and his Mom for the great chair!
Sorry, I had to chop up the whole comment that I offered, but, you can get the gist of it.
END DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY! It is going to take a public outcry and epidemic proportions to bring some help to us. Let me warn you, it is not only German Shepherds that are stricken with this disease, it also strikes Corgis, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Boxers, Chesapeake Retrievers, to name a few, and is showing up in many other breeds! I personally feel that it is much more prevalent than we even know.
It has been a secret and unmentionable for decades, unless we protest loudly and make it public knowledge, it will continue to wreak havoc on these glorious German Shepherd Dogs. They deserve so much more honor and justice. It is only by bringing it to the forefront, and that we make it known and public knowledge. The GSD gives us so much, can't we go to war for them? Do something! Thank you, PLD
He did have Degenerative Myelopathy and I had to euthanize him eventually, because of it. The University of Missouri may or may not be on the right track. But, in my experience, they were right. This is all that we have at this point,.
I pray to God that they are learning something about this vicious disease. It's a demon and a killer. The disease is very elusive and after decades it is a mystery.
So far, from everyone that I've talked to, several pet owners and several breeders, their DNA test has been 100% correct in determining a positive rating. Degenerative Myelopathy has occurred in all of their dogs that have received an "At risk" rating. The OFA is offering the test and has a link to the University of Missouri and Dr Joan Coates, who is head of this research. I had the test done on my German Shepherd, and it resulted in an "At Risk" rating.
I have already lost my German Shepherd, Reese. He first started showing symptoms in February '09 and by June '09 was completely paralyzed in his hindquarters. I felt that the disease moved at warp speed. He and I fought it with everything that we could, but, in the end I had to put him down, to end his ordeal. He was beautiful and healthy all of his life until this. He was only 9 yrs old. Degenerative Myelopathy is a Demon disease, that has been a hidden and unspoken secret among breeders
for decades. Although today, there are a few GSD breeders that are starting to try to make a difference by pulling the dogs with DM from their breeding stock. The newest information is that the University of Missouri has come up with a DNA test that they say identifies the mutant gene associated with DM. It only takes $65 to have a DNA test run on your dog. You can submit a swab or a blood sample to have tested. Yes, it is new, yes, it might not be an absolute answer, but, it is the latest data.
I AGREE, let's END degenerative myelopathy soon!
I HATE that disease!
