Supporting Young Adults with Developmentally Disabilities.

An individual with Developmental disabilities, including Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome and Autism, requires ongoing support services throughout his/her entire life in order to live a productive and full life. Today, in the state of Illinois, when an individual reaches the age of 21 they are no longer entitled to state funding for these support services. Due to prolonged and severe budget cuts to social services programming, Illinois has a waiting list over 14,000 individuals long with unmet urgent or emergency needs. Thousands of young adults with DD will wait years for funding for service. Most of these young individuals will lose valuable skills, both functional and social while waiting for this funding. Bridge2Hope is a 501(c)(3) Illinois nonprofit organization founded by the parents of a developmentally disabled young adult. Our purpose is to provide a temporary funding source for day and/or residential programming for young adults with developmental disabilities who are transitioning out of entitled school age services and into adult service programming. Providing the smoothest transition possible and raising awareness of the need to support this population of individuals are our primary goals.
