Alex Mares, former Lead Ranger at Hueco Tanks, addresses visitors to the 2007 Hueco Tanks State Historic Site Interpretative Fair. Kiowa tribal members who attended the 2007 Interpretative Fair were the late Dennis Belindo, Barry Belindo, Jon Belindo, Martha Koomsa-Perez, Ella Fae Horse, Melba Wermy, Steve Smith, Micah Emerson, Dewey Tsonetokoy Sr. and Dewey Tsonetokoy Jr.-----Although Alex Mares was forced to resign his position at Hueco Tanks as Lead Ranger Mares continued as a "volunteer" until his volunteer status was also terminated. The action taken against him and his family was completely unwarranted. As the former Lead Ranger of Hueco Tanks Alex Mares and wife Lillian were responsible for cultivating all of the relationships between Hueco Tanks and the culturally and historically affiliated tribal groups. The participation of the tribal groups is what made the annual Interpretative Fair a huge success year after year. Preservation wise, Alex Mares understood the significance of the cultural and natural resouces at Hueco Tanks and its importance to the culturally and historically affiliated tribes. With the elimination of his participation the so-called "bouldering" community now has free reign at Hueco Tanks.
Way to go Alex! We are behind you and your cause buddy! Good Luck!
