Bears have been observed in this manner in this region of Alaska for many years and bears have learned to trust and ignore humans, we carry handheld signal flares (never firearms), but in 11 years, and thousands of encouters, I have only had to use them 2 or 3 times- work well to scare the bears who approach us too closely and will not leave with clapping /shouting. If treated well and respected, bears are very easy to get along with, and in my view, they are predictable.

Amazing footage, I wish the videographer did not get that close to the Bears. the only predators the Bears have is man. And since they are protected in the park there is no hunting. That leaves only illegal poachers. It serves the Bears no good to familiarize them with man. It allows the poachers an easy approach.

Gus, you have a point, but the videographer never appreaches the bears that close, they appraoch us.
There is no poaching in this region of the park, and hasnt been for many years. This is one of the few places on earth where bears and humans trust and respect each other. Bears here have the opportunity to capture the hearts of humans, and dispell the myths that they are naturally dangerous to man. Bears are dangerous when man makes mistakes.

Don't get me wrong this is great footage and I enjoyed viewing it. I didn't realize all the poaching was eliminated. A few questions. How is the Bear population controlled? Has there been any instances where the Boars have killed the cubs to breed the sows? Wild Bears and can be unpredictable, did you have a plan if one decided to attack?

Great questions, This is Brad Josephs, the guide for the film crew. bears regulate their own populations very well as females will not bear cubs if they are not fat enough. Boars will, on rare occasions, kill cubs and younger bears when food is short and competition is high. It is extremely unlikely that boars kill cubs to breed the sows because it often happens in the late fall and usually by males who have not gotten fat stores, and breeding happens in the spring.
