With Internet traffic growing steadily, rumors that overusage will crash this pillar of modern society crop up from time to time. But University of Minnesota researcher Andrew Odlyzko doesn't buy that. He sees traffic growing at somewhere around 50 percent per year and the average internet user consumes 10 to 15 gigabytes of data per month, but it's nothing to worry about — at least not yet. Wireless devices like iPhones and Blackberries are putting a strain on the networks and current technology can catch up.

This video is part of the Expert Perspectives series at the University of Minnesota.

  • dam thats crazy

  • Internet never runs out of space, for my opinion.

  • @Feoremar

Yes, as a former uni student I can safely inform you that there is even higher levels of monotonous.

It's horrible. Your brain just drips out your ears and everything grows dim..

  • @BuyAuths Yes it will, the current IP scheme v4 will run out. In fact if it hadn't been for technology improvements like NAT/PAT, VLSM and CIDR then it would have run out a long time ago. These technologies have enabled the IPv4 address space to be conserved while a new IP addressing scheme was devised and integrated. Chances are if you are running windows 7 on your LAN you are already using IPv6 seamlessly with IPv4.

  • @BuyAuths IPv6 won't. IPv4 will in a few years. We defnietly shouldn't trust you.

  • @BuyAuths u prolly have no idea of what ip address is do u?

  • Chroma Keyed is feathered too much, greatly noticeable.

  • @BuyAuths

not anymore! they adjusted the amount of digits in an IP address to where if the Internet 3 months ago were the size of a golf ball, the new one would be the size of the sun!
