Fast and compact vertical signal in Minecraft

No idea at all if someone else has already invented this, but here's a compact way to send a signal directly up or down up to 12 blocks in Minecraft using pistons and sand. The upward sending technique is much simpler and almost certainly has been developed before, but the downward sending technique isn't so obvious.

NOTE: all repeaters shown are set at 1 tick.

Caveats: you can't send two pulses too close to each other or else you'll break the sand-- the greater the distance, the longer the needed cool-down time. Also, you can't hook one of these up to another to extend the range. I've tried lots of different ways to do that, but it always ends up being really unstable and buggy. I've also tried to dispense with the repeaters on the lower pistons for the downward-sending rig, and this caused the pistons to randomly and rapidly fire and destroy all the sand.
