One of the great pioneers of jazz trumpet, Red Allen suffered from comparisons with 'Pops' but in truth was a superb stylist himself - one of the great New Orleans trumpet players. Band includes: Al Cay - tenor sax; Fred Hunt - piano; Lennie Hastings - drums; Jim Douglas - guitar. Bass? Trombone?
trombone is roy crimmins and bass is ron mathewson

Music may come and go and change, but jazz stays the same.

I agree. If we had not had Louis Armstrong we would have had Henry "Red" Allen.

Definitely Roy Williams on trombone. I did a few gigs with Roy and Jimmy Douglas many moons ago. Jimmy still lives near me in Bedfordsire, Roy used to live in Luton. I also gigged with Roy's son Andy who had such a promising career on guitar, wonder what happened to him? Going back 20 odd years, hehe perhaps even 30 years. don't time fly when ur havin fun !!

@msailors exactly , I don't understand this tendency to compare and contest as if we are watching a football game. The good point is the joy of that moment now long gone yet recorded for us here where we can once again share in the pleasure together, strangers over time and distance. Stay on the good foot ,swinging ,man!

So nice to see and hear my cousin Al Gay on tenor sax. This was never his real name and like me changed it many years ago.

This is SO good. Red blows his socks off, and fair play to the Alex Welsh band, the best traditional jazz band ever to come out of the UK (well, Scotland mostly). Great stuff. Can listen to it all day. R.I.P. all you guys. See ya soon!
