The aria 'Apri la tua finestra' from Mascagni's opera Iris.
On a sunny spring day - the 11th of April 1902 - the 29th year old Enrico Caruso walked into the lobby of the Grand Hotel in Milan to meet Fred Gaisberg of the Gramophone Company in London. In two hours 10 songs - the last being Apria la tua finestra - were recorded in one of the hotel suites and Caruso walked out with a cheque for 100 £ - and the world of opera would never be the same.

Dear Papoocanada, I'd sure like to know who these better singers are. You are entitled to a minority opinion, but wow. I wonder if you've really ever listened to Caruso. None better, even my beloved Bjoerling.

How seemingly effortless, how natural and how beautiful.

Thank you for posting this most precious
treasure!!! One of my favorite tenor arias
sung to perfection. No one today seems
to have the courage to attempt to sing it.
Sublime!
