The U.S. born Iranian journalist who has just been freed speaks to the public for the first time since her release. Here's more on the story.
U.S. born journalist Roxana Saberi was all smiles as she made her first
public appearance since being released from jail in Tehran.
Speaking to media with her father in the Iranian capital, her relief was
clear for all to see:
[Roxana Saberi, U.S. Journalist]:
"I'm of course very happy to be free and to be with my parents
again and I want to thank all the people all over the world, which I'm just
finding out about really, who, whether they knew me or not, helped my family
during this period. I don't have any specific plans for the moment, I just
want to be with my parents and my friends and to relax. Thank you very
much."
Saberi, a citizen of both the United States and Iran, was arrested in
January for working in the country after her press credentials expired.
She was later accused of spying for the U.S., a charge she's now been
acquitted of, after her eight year jail term was reduced on appeal on
Monday.
She can now leave Iran, but has been banned from working as a journalist
there for 5 years.
It's a turn of events that some hope will help U.S. government efforts to
improve relations with the Islamic Republic.
