Chapter 26: Fearless

At about midnight, I finally glanced at my watch, and my eyes widened in alarm.
Whats wrong? Emily asked, startled.
Its midnight, I replied. I told Taylor Id have you home by now.
By this time, the rain had finally ceased, and there was a warm breeze blowing off the water. The two of us had been dancing for a while. I didnt want the night to end, but I had to be a gentleman and have her home on time.
You know what I told her? she responded.
I cocked a brow, a bemused expression on my face. Do I want to know?
Emily grimaced up at me. I told her to mind her own business and that Id be out with you as late as I wanted. Besides, the house is only ten minutes away.
I hated this. I really did. I wanted this night to last forever. I was having the time of my life with a girl that was complete perfection. She knew everything about me, and yet here she was, opening up to me and making me feel human. But I knew Taylor would hunt me down if I brought Em home too late.
Thats ten minutes later youll be if we dont leave now.
Fine, she sighed.
As we walked back to the car, Emily slid her hand into mine, seemingly unthinkably. I opened the door and let her slide in before shutting it for her. Best. Night. EVER!

As Nick drove me home, I watched him, my eyes searching over his profile, from his deep brown eyes to his perfect lips and back. He pulled his fingers through his wet curls, causing my breath to catch in my throat.
What am I doing? I thought. I couldnt be having these feelings. Taylor trusted me. Im supposed to be helping him, not thinking about how gorgeous and muscular and sweet and—stop! No! I cant.
But right then, he glanced over at me, and smiled one of his heart-stopping crooked grins, and I felt my breath catch in my throat for the millionth time that night. How did he have this effect on me? Then I realized he was still staring at me.
What? I blushed, hoping he couldnt tell what I was thinking about.
Nothing, he chuckled, and then turned his attention back to the road as the light turned green.
I laughed, and then turned to stare out the window so that I wasnt staring at him. I was still watching out the window when we pulled into my driveway five minutes later. Nick was out of the car and at my door in an instant to help me out of the car. He didnt let go of my hand as he walked me to the front door. He didnt let go of my hand as he walked me to the front door.
I kinda dont want this night to end, he told me shyly, rubbing the back of his neck.
With a smile, I led him over to the front porch swing, the one Id insisted we brought with us when we moved to Linnings.
Youre really great, Em, the boy said softly, sitting close.
I ducked my head to hide my red cheeks.
Why do you say that?
He thought for a moment. Youre, like, the best friend I never had. I never tell anyone half the things Ive told you, and you never judge me. Youre just amazing.
I could feel my heart sink when he said best friend. Of course I was his friend. Hes Nick freakin Jonas, for crying out loud. He had millions of girls lined up, just waiting for him to look their way. Im so average.
I looked up at him and forced a smile. Youre pretty great, too. And Im really glad to be your best friend. Youre mine, too.
As we talked for a little while longer, I could feel my heart breaking as he laughed and joked with me. I felt so stupid for thinking it could have been anything more. Finally, Brooklyn came home with a sleeping Bella in her arms to send Nick back to his house, then went inside to put the baby down.
Well, I guess thats my not-so-subtle cue, Nick laughed once the door had shut behind her.
Yeah, B has her ways, I chuckled.
He reached down and pulled me up from the swing. As much as I hated to admit it, I felt a shock of tingles rush up my arm. Looking up at him, I realize how close we were standing. Oh, crap.
***
I was so not ready to say goodnight to this girl. She was so beautiful, and warm, and perfect. I had these feelings for her that Id never felt for anyone else. I felt totally and completely unsure of how I was supposed to handle this.
Goodnight, Emily, I told her, giving her a quick hug.
Night, Nick, she said, peering up at me through her dark lashes. Thanks for tonight. It was a ton of fun.
I could feel myself getting lost in her sparkly deep blue eyes. I leaned down and kissed her cheek, then smiled. Anytime, Em.
