I took the liberty of checking Toshiba's Linux Forums. For the most part Toshibas are compatible with Linux. Your issue sounds like a video driver issue though. If you PM me the model of your laptop with the stats I should be able to hunt it down for you.
I used to run Linux all the time, but quit after I quit programming. James got me back into it and I doubt that I will be going back to windows this time.

@james25313 no lie linux has gotten better from what it was & i would like to learn more by using it as one of my os but like i said ubuntu don't work on my notebook i when looking around & found that toshiba laptops are not linux friendly but if you find otherwise then let me know what you find i just don't wanna run it on a virtual pc cause it is annoying to do & right now that is the only way i can run it

@ROBISDISTURBED ...yeah their is some things that are a hassle to install but most of the programs are ez to install now on linux.. keep watching my linux tutorials and u will see how much easier linux has gotten. I wouldnt say switch right away I still keep window on my computers. it just take time to learn linux because its different...also the problem that u are having might be the install disc u was using or ubuntu doesnt have the driver for ur graphic card. but I think it was the disc...

Linux can run anything. All you need is a frontend to get the backend to work. A lot of people have scripted numerous frontends for various software. Also as you saw in the video James mentioned Wine = windows software on Linux.
Try Ubuntu 10.4 on your laptop. All software you need is free to download from their download manager or their download store (the term store being used loosely because everything is free. If you must have a certain software use wine, etc to emulate.
