This tune almost brings me to tears each and every time I listen to it...

Having recently finished some of the strongest work of his career, Smith's run came to an abrupt end in 1973. The cause of his death is not certain.

One story has it that Smith, severely depressed over the impression that rival singer Roy Shirley's career was being pushed at the cost of his own, smashed in a window with his hand and bled to death as he walked off into the night.

Another account comes from singing partner Jimmy Riley, who says that Smith returned from a late-night party, found himself locked out of his house, smashed the window, and bled to death before anyone found him.

Another story is that he committed suicide following the break up with a girlfriend. Whether his death was caused by depression and subsequently suicide is still not really known and the words of this song are so meaningful in view of the possible causes of his passing.

  • I love this song so much. Gets me every time.

  • without a doubt the biggest loss in the history of reggae music... hands down the best singer ever.

  • Can you imagine the tunes we would have had the pleasure of listening to had he been around longer. So young, yet such a huge loss to reggae music.

  • Top top version by Slim of one of the best Deep Soul tunes around, this was originally done by Jimmy Holiday and that version is great too, heart wrenching stuff, I'm a massive reggae fan but i gotta say I like the Jimmy Holiday just a bit more, check it out its on you tube , i love them both though, but this is one of the best Soul Reggae covers I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot!!

  • Slim Smith died November 10, 1972. the story in The Gleaner was that he was in his apartment and was upset, broke a window and subsequently cut himself. he refused any treatment, and was found dead the following day. the reason for his distress was not given, although he died inside his apartment. he was buried in May Pen Cemetery the following Sunday.
