I discovered by accident that redstone will trigger a block update detection sensor if it affects any block within the 3x3x3 space around the piston.
I suspect this is because redstone has to affect blocks around itself based on its connectivity and charge, but you could use this for a bunch of discrete ideas, including wire-tapping in SMP or as a special hidden button-like trigger in adventure maps.
You could also use it to check if wires have been discretely damaged, a BUD sensor in this formation seemed pretty reliable for checking alterations to a length of wire 5 blocks long (in all directions) when placed above the middle of it.
