"Lightning" somehow managed to get inside a large office building, where he promptly scared heck out of a secretary down the hall from me. I managed to capture him and take him home, where we filmed him before going out to find a suitable wild place to release him. Releasing him back outside the building was not a wise idea as the property management had recently put out poison to stop the ground squirrels from undermining the foundations.

We fed Lightning a few cubes of raw steak, which he devoured with enthusiasm. The next night we took him out to a very nice creek a few miles away and turned him loose to find another weasel and make lots of little weasels.

Unfortunately, about 6 months later a developer bulldozed the entire creek to build an un-needed housing development which is nothing but a bunch of empty streets to this day -- hopefully all the weasels bit him before he went bankrupt! ;)

  • Thanks for being good enough to help him. Weasels in the wild generally only survive one or two seasons. They are marvellous predators but are also prey to larger species. I have met a frenata who somehow lost a good half of his tail. In northern areas they do not have the markings on theri face - just a solid brown face.

  • Like the Marines, my motto is "Leave no Mustelid Behind" -- lol ;)

I was surprised by the appearance of his ears -- from photos and drawings I had seen I expected them to be furry, like a ferret. But his were bare skin, rather bat-like.

  • It was 2003.

He made domestic ferrets look positively sluggish! And he was ferocious too, a little 6-ounce (?) critter but he was more than willing to take me on... he didn't know the meaning of "backing down"

  • what a beautiful animal, it has a long and smooth body

  • "i think hes figured out that tugboat cant get him".. i think he would inihilate tugboat.

  • I looked at photos on internet and it looks like a Weasel but sure moves fast... I didn't know how fast they moved in comparison to Ferrets. Was this in 2003 (as the camera video says or this year) ?
