This video seeks to explore the common Christian belief that the 'rest' Christ offered in Matthew 11:28 somehow replaces the rest of the Sabbath day.

What we find is that the theme of rest that Jesus offers us is a different theme of rest that the seventh-day Sabbath is based on. As such, the catch-phrase "I rest in Christ" is actually the product of a mixed-metaphor and does not apply to the Sabbath day.

  • very nice speaking but what about col 2:16. i still dont get the diffrence between the sabbath rest and the sabbath day? isnt the rest jesus was talkin aout is the same esake rest that supposly happens on the sabbath? dont sabbath mean rest?

  • The Sabbath day is a day of rest but the theme of "rest" that Christ offered in Matthew 11:28 is not the same. There are different themes of rest found in the scriptures and each of these aspects of "rest" offers different benefits (so to speak). In Matthew, Christ offers a rest: from the unwieldy rabbinical "laws" & from the guilt of sin (hence the reference to "souls"). Sabbath rest provides us time to let go of the world and spend focused time with God, along with a host of other things.

  • It seems that YT is again deleting posts on this comment's page. I know of at least 2 posts that are now missing - one from PreachinShawn and my reply to his post.

Is anyone else having this issue?

  • Christ is saying in Heb 4 that if you DON'T keep the WEEKLY sabbath you will NOT enter into the MILLENNIAL SABBATH which is the 1000 year reign of Christ with the resurrected or changed saints (people of God). Those who attain that resurrection..that IS ones salvation or Eternal LIFE! If you don't enter that weekly sabbath you will NOT BE SAVED!! The OT Israelites FAILED to enter into the OT promised land because of a lack of FAITH! They did not obey and were afraid to keep God's commandments!!

  • I agree that they kept merely the letter of the law without having love as the foundation for that obedience. It is of interest to note that not a single Sabbath-keeping follower of Christ was caught in the seige. So, it wasn't the keeping of the law that was at issue, it was their failure to accept Jesus as Messiah.

It comes down to motive; we shouldn't keep Sabbath if our motive is legalistic. We should keep it/them out of a love response to God (Ex 20:6;John 14:15,21; 1 Jn 5:2,3).

  • Note what people was Jesus speaking about, these people whom he was talking about were those who had to leave because the town was going be sacked .Why ? Because GOD was giving those Sabbath keepers who did not know their Messiah Jesus. God was giving them over to captivity. They were excellent keepers of the law but only to the letter of the law.

  • And that is a valid concern; but the text makes no mention is such. The prayer says "your flight be not IN the winter, neither ON the sabbath day:" (emphasis mine)- the concern of Christ is the 'time' not the actions of others.

Also, it should be noted that Jesus doesn't qualify His statement; He doesn't say "on the Sabbath that the Jews will still be keeping", or "the old Sabbath" - He refers to it as being unaltered.

I see your point but I don't see any evidence that it was an issue.

  • I simply meant that those who follow the rabbinical teachings would give those traveling a hard time, and may have tried to stop them, or possibly kill them for violating what they believed to be sabbath restrictions.

  • Just to verify: I checked the historical record of any evidence to see if locking the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath was a common practice. I have looked at all the records of Josephus and he records no such practice; the same holds true with Tacitus & Justus of Tiberias.

The Talmud mentions only locking of the gates at night-time which occured every day.

  • Locking the gates of the city was not a common practice. In fact, we have no record that locking the gates on the Sabbath was continued beyond that event in Nehemiah. In the time of Christ no such practice existed.

Also, if you'll recall, Jesus did not adopt the rabbinical teachings that ran contrary to God's word - so rabbinical travel restrictions would not concern Him or His disciples either.

    So my question stands.
