  • I consider myself extremely honoured to have known this smashing fellow. I did both my degrees in the Sussex Biology department and attended all of his lectures. He was always ready to help with amazing insights and advice and his door was always open. So sad he's gone, but what a contribution he made.

  • @rubymaynardsmith Just think, someday you'll be the same age as your granddad, and you might discover things just as important as he did, and help others learn just as he did!

  • @rubymaynardsmith Would your family be interested in adopting another daughter? ;)

  • @rubymaynardsmith wow, John Maynard Smith as your grandfather. You're a very lucky person.

  • Im a friend of his Grandson Sean....WEEEEEEEEEEEEEUW!

  • @fullgenomealchemist I was his last post-doc for 10 years.

  • @noelsussex

I was not meaning compared to his own other contributions. It was more in recognition of the fact that genetic hitchhiking is now the major signal used to study positive selection. Are you related to the CSE at University of Sussex?

  • @fullgenomealchemist I''m not sure I agrre. Game Theory applied to biology was perhaps more important and John should have been invited to Stockholm for that. ' Major Transitions' is very influential.

A manuscript called 'How clonal are bacteria?' had a profound effect on the whole area of bacterial population genetics.
