Why did they change the general and characters?

nanrodmada: I think they changed the General Lee simply because they didnt get licence to use the Dodge Charger brand, if you notice they never mention "Dodge" or "Charger" in the game, and the actors well they were probably too expensive to use for Southpeak Interactive, when you play the game you can clearly see the game is made on a tight budget.

Reminds me of the plastic toy car that a company called "Processed Plastics" released in the 80's and could be bought at stores such as K-Mart, Rose's T-G and Y, and various other stores that were around before Wal-Mart .

The writer for the cutscenes was only brought in after the game was already complete. So the story had to fit around all the races which were already set. There's an interview with him on the On The Page podcast (ep 63, Nov 2008)

@Nemesis803 This game features the voices of Waylon Jennings, James Best, Ben Jones, Sonny Shroyer, and Tom Wopat.

I guess John Schneider and Catherine Bach didn't want to do it and Denver Pyle and sorrell booke are dead.
