As Building Green TV host Kevin Contreras often says, if you're going to build it, build it green. When he weighed the options, a steel post and beam frame for his straw bale dream home made the most sense. It's half the weight of wood after all, and yet it has twice the strength. It is guaranteed to be straight, comes pre-cut and is made from 66% recycled materials - leaving our precious forests untouched. Termites and earthquakes beware! Watch this episode of Building Green for more on the latest in steel framing and other green building solutions for a greener, healthier, more energy efficient home. Top it all off with a green roof, and you are well on your way to helping save the planet.

  • steel is very likely to create cold bridges as it conducts heat away from your living space. i would not recommend it in passive solar houses in colder climates.

  • How about Monolithic domes????

  • Timber construction is incredibly carbon efficient. In fact more carbon is saved than expended with timber construction.

  • Somebody shoud throw this guy in a steel smelting pot, see how green he thinks his "60% recycled" steel really is. Manufacturing anybody? Digging up the iron ore. Nice straw bails, good luck on re-sale. Tell your wealthy owners I feel sorry for them, obviously money doesn't make you smart.

  • Cost effective for your design, There is your sign of a true building idiot. Don't you realize the DESIGN should evolve around cost, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND IDIOT. Metal is NOT green, metal is NOT cheaper. The only place you will find a metal home, one Youtube, where the DUMBEST BUILDERS IN THE WORLD POST VIDEOS!!!! Real builder are out making real money, while broke wanna be's looking for work are posting vids.

  • lol .. the farmers/my ancestors were already using their roof tops during the great depression to capture rain water.. my folks do that now.. to water their gardens .. we use grey water from the washer machines to water the lawns.. great for killing off bugs..and keeping ants, various bug eggs, and aphids off the floral garden and grass. I don't have to use pesticides.

  • if you want to build green then build it out of HEMP. wtf is this steel shit? even Cali should know that. stupid fckin american gov't
