Actually, "It's a Sony" was from the 80's in reference to the stylized "S" logo Sony had used up until the late 1990s.
The concern with the stylized S logo was that people might not know what it meant or stood for, so the tagline "It's a Sony" was associated with the logo and, many times, the words may be found directly underneath the stylized S.
