Kenyan Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru was killed when he jumped off the balcony of his home late on Sunday, police said on Monday.

The 24-year-old runner died late Sunday after jumping from a balcony at his home in the town of Nyahururu, in the Rift Valley, said John Mbijiwe, the police chief in Kenya's Central Province.

Police said they were trying to ascertain whether the 24-year-old -- the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon at Beijing in 2008.

News of the death spread like bushfire in the town and by the morning many people among them athletes had thronged the Nyahururu district hospital mortuary where the body was lying.

Police are still investigating whether the fall was suicide or an accident.

hope that athletes from kenya take many medals home next year and dedicate them to mr. wanjiru. great loss for the athletic community in Kenya, Africa and the whole world.
