better than anything john & paul ever could've written. I don't know, it just gives a whole other emotion. they just feel real. the beatles feel like something in a package that you get, like, "this is the greatest band in the world, now listen to it and like it." I'm not told to like the kinks. no one told me about them. I found them myself and they feel more special to me that why. it's like their my band, not the entire world's band like the beatles are. I like them so much better. who agrees

Anyone know if Nicky Hopkins is playing harpsichord on this song?

One of the great albums, yet it really did not get much attention....Ray Davies and his band kept hitting home runs but nobody bothered to tabulate....something about Kink songs grabbed me with "Well Respected Man" and never let go...."Village Green" and all the others were masterpieces.....Imagine writing "Lola" "Waterloos Sunset" and "Sunny Afternoon" Big Man with the pen...

@EvilSkeptic why were they blacklisted in usa ..??? never heard that before...

Why compare the Kinks to the Beatles at all? They were different bands. Some people think that the Kinks are underrated. Not by musicians they aren't. They are one of the most covered bands out there. As for success, part of the problem was that the Kinks were blacklisted in the US for several years and couldn't tour here. Also, they were aggressively British and had to be taken on their terms. That's something I like about them. Debates like who was better are pointless. Both bands were great.

@albertom01982 Of COURSE you can say they're better than the Beatles. It's an OPINION, dipshit. And to raphaelkiddmusic, the Kinks are "far better than the Beatles." You're entitled to YOUR opinion that the Beatles are better (I happen to agree with you), but to imply someone "cannot say they're better than the Beatles is to suggest nobody can have a different opinion. The world is FULL of people with different opinions. Hell, you can probably even find someone who doesn't think your a dipshit!

@BigChiefLtd I feel the same way. I remember I bought it when it first came out and I played it constantly. I practically wore it out in addtion to wearing out my parent's nerves. "Don't you have any other records??????"
Sounds just as good today as ever.

i love the who tommy ,..i love sf sorrow pretty things, ...i love the small faces ,... but i LOVE the Kinks the MOST !

I bought this album when it first came out. I think it was 1969 or 1970. I remember The Who got all the attention with their "rock opera" Tommy. But this album... there was always something special about it. And it WAS my young and innocent days back then. I found the CD not long ago at a flea market and bought it. I hadn't heard these songs in 30 years. When this song came on, I must admit, the tears welled up. I'm 60 now. And I'm so glad I had Ray & The Kinks to help me make the journey!

This song is so beautiful in capturing the sweet sadness of remembering our young and innocent days. Ray Davies is an incomparably brilliant and sensitive songwriter, and I believe Arthur is the Kinks' finest album. I feel the Kinks are second only to the Beatles in the stunning beauty and diversity of their music. Ray Davies is the finest songwriter of all, the most literate, creative, and the most brilliant at capturing all the emotions that make up a human life. God save the Kinks!
