I work for 13 years as a VJ"s (video journalists) when in hurry or no possibilities to set up I use a good directional on-camera microphone and just film the interview without second mic, you need to make sure that you stay close to the subject and away from pointing the camera to the laud audio sources.
To do it properly you sit the interviewee on the fixed chair-not the office ones as people tent to move, than make sure you have sufficient light, space behind interviewee, good audio.....
@SerialNumberInvalid You partially right , if you are using a powered Mic you need to check that but most of consumer camcorders don't offer power possibilities for this type of microphones (batteries could be used instead ). so NO he doesn't have to check for power if he is using a dynamic mic.
you made a CRITICAL mistake in this video. you FORGOT to tell the viewers to make sure that the microphone has POWER! many times, people forget to check power in their batteries or even insert a battery. this mic level should be checked on screen. poor mistake i didn't expect from "reuters"!
Can you please post the name & model of the camera & microphone you use? Does the camera have an audio meter to show how the audio is coming in or a headphone jack so you can hear the quality of the audio you're catching?

I also want to know what kind of camera and mic you use? Are you happy with it? Price range for your setup?
Any negatives?
