My Dad died young, from being 4 hours in freezing water after his ship was sunk by a Dornier bomber, while en-route to Murmansk with cargo for the Red Army. He was one of 8 who survived from a crew of 68. When he died, I was 5 years old, & we were in the bush in Africa.

2/ "It was a bitter time. German forces siezed victory on every front. In southern Russia, they were moving towards Krasnodar, Stalingrad and the Caucaus. Across the desert the English armies couldn't save themselves from disaster from the tanks of Rommel."

1/ "Murmansk defended itself. There were few anti-aircraft weapons. Ships weapons and cannon fired at the aircraft. 200 aircraft every day bombed the port, the docks, and loaded ships lying in the port. During this time more than 1000 port-dwellers? were hospitalised with(?) first degree (wounds/burns?). The city was almost obliterated by the air."
