ASL; Miranda Warning Interpretation

Voice to Sign assignment. This is the Miranda warning interpreted from frozen text.

I am aware that I should expand more but for this particular assignment extreme expansion is not required. Only the main purpose of the frozen text interpretation was necessary.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?"

I'm not an American, but what happens when the police officer asks if the person understands and they either - do not respond, or respond in the negative? Now what? Do they still get arrested?

I always wondered.....

Hey, well when you get them read to you usually you are being arrested. Them asking if you understand, is to know whether or not you know you can exercise these rights. If they respond negatively, they may ask again before beginning questioning.

Curious to know what state you are from? I've been as a certified interpreter for over 20 years w/10+ years in legal interpreting and have never seen the non-dominant hand under the fingerspelling hand. I'm not saying it's wrong, of course. Each state has their own dialect which is why I ask. For your Miranda, I suggest condensing the interpretation. Expansion is wonderful, but if overdone, it can cause confusion and muddy the main points. Write a gloss of ur video to see what u get. Good Luck!

Also, if they do not understand their rights, nd waive these rights, then it can ause a case to be thrown out. I heard a story in class about this (involving ASL in fact) where the woman was arrested for killing her husband and an "interpretor" asked if it was "right to be a Lutheran" instead of "you have the right to a lawyer". The woman said no to the Lutheran, and then argued in court that she hadn't been offered a lawyer, and the case was thrown out. But she was guilty and it was too late.
