Harsher penalties can increase the likelihood of more violent crimes. A person engaged in a crime, e.g,. robbery, may assume an "all or nothing" attitude due to the realization of the extensive penalty for their offense. This is a very complicated issue a more lenient consequence may not necessarily reduce the desire to commit a serious offense. She is unearthing some of the social/historical underpinnings of how we got here. We all need to consider this information when thinking of solutions.
