this little "tutorial" aims at the very beginners who are very new to zynaddsubfx and who probably asked themselves after playing with it a bit things like: "omg LOL, wtf, where are the waveforms? 0o"

so here a little video where i put together a simple saw bass with filter envelope and a supersaw pad:

1. i change user interface mode to "advanced mode"
2. get rid of the reverb effect on the master channel
3. click "edit instrument" and then click "edit" in the "Addsynth" row
4. click "show voice parameters" and then i click the "change" button in the oscillator section and select a simple saw after some playing
5. some amp envelope and filter/filter envelop tweakage
6. then i copy'n'paste the 1st voice to the other 7 available voices to create a supersaw and detune the voices after that. (notice that you can copy'n'paste pretty much everything in zynaddsubfx: filter settings, envelopes, lfos, whole instruments etc.)

well, and if you think the user inteface is too complicated for you and that you'll rather use synth1 or something, ask yourself: what synth would jesus use?

  • @all Please check out the videos from the user zynaddsubfx, it's Paul himself afaik, the guy who created this little soundwonder.

He makes some beautiful patches in his videos.

  • Is there a way to patch this into renoise without using jack? Everytime I select jack as the audio my renoise crashes.

  • @johngeetar there is a rather current dssi version which you could search for, but you can't edit patches in it afaik, only load prebuild patches. also you'll need a licence, because dssi-support is only in beta right now (dunno when official build will come out).

If renoise crashes upon selecting jack as audio out you should report this bug on the renoise forums, since there's likely something wrong with your setup.

  • Ignore the ratings, I got this on my own videos.. It seems there are some commercial software synth vendors that really hate that there is a software synth in open source that kicks their collective asses. So they come in here and vote the videos down hoping people will ignore it.

  • Download LMMS. It has zynaddsubfx included as an instrument. Use LMMS's sequencing functions to render a full song.

  • I loved Zyn, but I kinda left it after I got a new computer and went with Win7. I used Zyn on Linux... sadly there isn't a great VST of it yet so it doesn't really flow well with my workflow. And I really don't feel like doing backwards stuff to render stuff from it. Someone really needs to get this thing a proper VST GUI...

My problems with Zyn VST: The old one Nasca released couldn't be opened for more than one instance- the one VDX released makes my Synapse Orion unresponsive. menu wise.

  • I need to figure out why this keeps crashing on my LMMS. It is so much better than the triple oscillator (which is still good).

Every time I open up the virtual keyboard and start playing it goes down. I've been having random crashes with LMMS though, so it could be related to that.

  • @Hassan1der1Waise Cool thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I opted to throw another hard drive in and dual boot to windows. I just can't find enough to work with under linux as far as instrumentation goes.

  • @vinc696 thanks
