Lawrence Spence (Kawasaki) drags his stricken machine over the finish line at the end of 45 minutes of racing.
The venue is Farleigh Castle GB, for the British round of the 1983 500cc Motocross World Championship.
Spence had been dicing with Graham Noyce during the closing stages but his gearbox locked within sight of the finish.
Swede Hakan Carlqvist won both races on his Yamaha.
This was a truly iconic moment in British Motocross history.
Pulling in the clutch won't make any difference when the gearbox is seized - the clutch connects the engine to the gearbox so pulling the clutch in is only beneficial if the engine seizes. The gearbox is connected to the rear wheel via the chain and sprockets only so if the gearbox locks up, so does the rear wheel unless you take the chain off.
