i did not figure this out, but was rather told the following.

menilmontant is a poor area. the man is a pimp. pimp's get their whores by starting a love affair with a woman and make them dependent on the pimp.

it's not very explicit in the film probably because of censorship.

this is probably the most opaque part. the rest can probably be deciphered once you know this.

what a lovely woman, those eyes !! I've tried several times to figure out what's going on , i can figure out the parts but not as a whole plot or story line..I do love trying, the 'look' and expressions are worth my time...........
