  • you geomtry on the head isnt the best, box modeling is a little more tedious but you dont have a bunch of triangles and stuff like that. Other than that excellent tutorial I was wanting to know how to do a pony tail!

  • @InsaneXade

Thanks for the feedback It was box modelled, from a sphere. I didn't bother retopolising the head because it wasn't going to deform anyway so it didn't matter if it had triangles, I just made sure to keep the polycount down for the hair.

You're welcome! the way I did the ponytail in this works, but there's something called hair guides where the hair follows a cv curve. It's more "pro" but I thought it's too much hassle for something you can do quite easily this way.

  • @DnBastard um, I do not mean to argue but box modeling is starting with a box/cube, not a sphere, you sphere modeled. There is nothing wrong with sphere modeling, don't get me wrong, but box modeling where you start everything from boxes makes a much cleaner mesh with less polygons and no triangles, resulting in a lower polycount in the long run. You also get a few pulls here and there to control the mesh shape better. This is a fine example goo. gl /ZbBKE and what I am using as a base.

  • @InsaneXade

Fair point. This is only my second model so I'm open to all advice and thanks very much!

    Nonetheless,

This was what I followed to get started, made by someone much better than I am XD

    Just

  • @DnBastard well, yes, I've modeled quite a few and found box modeling is the best one for getting good solid start on topology. I highly recommend that you visit blendercookie they have lots of things to help you get started and tons of videos. She is well made and very salvageable. Just work on squaring off the triangles. (back her up of course) Remember, two triangles makes a square and alt+J is your best friend, although I prefer deleting the triangles and making faces with the F key.

  • @InsaneXade Thanks! I've followed your advice and squaring off the triangles was easier than I thought it would be.

I've been doing a lot of speed modelling in college lately (finish assignment in 15 minutes = 6 hours to play counterstrike ;) ) and every time I've started with a box I haven't had to retopolise a single triangle. :D

  • @InsaneXade My bad, here: /watch?v=ac4qV2uIF3Q

  • @DnBastard yeah, it becomes fun after a while. Especially if you are listening to your favorite tunes :D blendswap com is a good place to download blends and examine them. There's a fem base that is really good study her and use her as a hand up to greater skills.

  • @DnBastard did you finish the wing tutorial?

  • @DnBastard alright thanks after this I might ask you another tut. For gundams.
