I've read all the arguments for and against colorization of the classics. The thing is, the b&w films are great, but with so many of the younger generation turning up their nose at anything not in color, perhaps colorization can help some of these films gain a new audience. As it is, if you buy a lot of these films on DVD these days, you get both versions so the point is pretty much mute as far as I'm concerned. But I now own three copies of this movie. I bought the black and white version a few years ago, and in the recently released version the give you both versions on separate disc. I won't even mention the one I recorded off television and gave to a family member earlier this year.

At any rate, the technology is a lot better than it was about ten years ago or more. All that aside, I do know this: Marjorie Reynolds was one beautiful woman whether she was in black and white or color, so especially watch for the close up near the end of the video.

  • Wizard of Oz was shot in Technicolor, a color system, and so was never colorizd. The first scenes of the film, in a farm, was intented in black&white, and when she went to the Land of OZ the image became colored. The film was always that way and never colorized.
