This is video from my flight aboard a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter of the Coast Guard Cutter Healy breaking ice in the Arctic Ocean during the Healy's summer voyage. Greatness isn't simply defined by horsepower. This ship conducts critical research and has an amazing crew of scientists and Coast Guardsmen.

1) USCGC Healy (the one in the video) max speed 17 kn; ice class - 1.4 m at speed 1-2 kn; 30500 horse powers by 2 x 11.2 MW diesel-electric turbines.
2) Rosatom`s Yamal; max speed 22 kn, 19.5 kn cruising speed; ice class 2.5 - 3.5 m (sic!) at speed 1-2 kn depending on density; 75000 horse powers by 2 x 171 MW nuclear reactors, which provide heat for 2 steam turbines, driving 6 generators.
How come US icebreakers have more power? Everyone knows Russia has the best icebreakers.

BTW Healy is not even the best US coast guard has, forget about the world. They have Polar Star which is a bit smaller but has an ice class of 1.8 m at 3 kn and at 1 kn. can take on ice of 3.5 m just like russian nuclear icebreakers, but only for a short time (unlike nuclear russians it requires refueling). Polar Star IS THE ONLY american icebreaker, that can even stand near russian ones.
Russia operates 4 Arktika class and many diesel powered icebreakers too, which are also good.
