  • thanks for the posting !!! i just bought 'Blues Busters' on Amazon and had it delivered. hadn't seen it since catching it on tv in 1978 !!! the BOYS still have NOT made it to DVD,, but plenty of good old VHS tapes around online. the copy i got is outstanding quality. the whole thing from beginning to end was as funny and entertaining as it was when i last saw it all those years ago.

Ha! Loved your Hall autograph story & that info about the Dell-Hall act! Background show biz trivia is ENDLESSLY fascinating & intriguing! How cool you met the late great Huntz himself. He was VERY good in a rare dramatic role as Paramount Studios head Jesse Lasky in the 70's movies "Valentino". THANKS so much (as always) prchristman! :)

  • @JubalCalif The Dell-Hall act helped lead to their divorces. Their wives claimed the act was taking up more of the two men's time than their marriages. Dell went on to TV success with Steve Allen's group that included Don Knotts, Bill Dana, and Louis Nye. I got Hall's autograph at a Long Island signing once. I was first in line. He started to sign in pen, and then realized he had to use a Sharpie instead. He signed over the pen part in Sharpie and told me, "You got a Picasso. I did it wrong."

Wow! You're a fount of intriguing & fascinating info, prchristman! Thanks so VERY much for that additional info! I think I did read something years ago about that nightclub act that Dell & Hall had. How awesome it would have been to see 'em in person! CHEERS! :-)

  • @joeparkson

    I thought so too!

  • @JubalCalif You're welcome! Happy holidays! The book says Huntz Hall was a fine singer in his youth. He ruined his voice at Madison Square Garden selling programs or peanuts or something like that in the stands. All that shouting did it. Blues Busters was the final Bowery Boys film for Gabe Dell, the piano player here. He'd wanted to leave the series earlier but had nowhere to go. He left when he landed a spot in "Tickets Please," a Broadway show. He also did a later nightclub act with Hall.

THANKS so much for that background info, prchristman! I appreciate it so very much! I've wondered for many years about whose voice that was dubbing for Huntz Hall! May this be your happiest holiday season....and may ALL your wishes & dream come true in the New Year! :-)

  • @JubalCalif A book, "The Films of the Bowery Boys," (and a website) say that John Lorenz was Huntz Hall's singing voice. Lorenz was uncredited. The book says other vocalists provided the singing voices of Adele Jergens and even Leo Gorcey (who mangles "Swanee River" when he sings in Sach's place at Louie's night club after Sach has been tricked into singing for a rival club across the street). The website says Lorenz turned 64 in 1950 and was in some silent pictures around 1915. He died in 1972.

  • The Bowery Thrush was so smooth to listen to, I enjoyed hearing him sing.
