Walnut Harvest

Wonder where those delicious walnuts come from and how they get them out of their shell. We went to a harvest to check them out.

I have many walnuts but also I have many squirls around. Can I harvest the nuts even they are not ripe?? if yes what do I do next/

@veronicaenriquez you should wait until they start to fall from the tree naturally and then you can start to collect them from the tree. That will mean that they will have mostly ripened on the tree. Store them in a cool dry area until the husks start to come off and then discard the husks, crack and remove the meat. You can then store the meat in the freezer.

@veronicaenriquez Squirls are pests - you need an air gun or something otherwise you're not going to see a nut from all your trees. Bloody squirls eat them all ant the ones they don't eat they stash for the winter.

Black Walnuts on the other hand have a bolder, earthier flavor. Their shells are thick, tough to crack, and will likely stain your hands. black walnuts are the real deal and havent been natural selctionated at least thats how i understand it from what google tells me.

@GardenGuy06 If I waited a few more months than now, The squirrels will have even ALL of them. Can they ripen on their own in a bucket somewhere if I pick them now? Already my garden is covered in pieces of shell that the squrrels have eaten.

Thank you for your input but the squirls are my main problem and a very a strong competicion I can see some nuts on the ground but I can not tell if they fell of naturally from the tree or with the squirls help ;-)
