US Gymnast, Rusty Mitchell, from Southern Illinois University was the first to do a double back in the Olympics. It was at the '64 Tokyo Olympics, on this same floor.

When's the last time you saw a guy do a back walkover?!
-
@JimmyDeLocke Did you do the "regular" high school excersise or were you a competitive gymnast ? Anyway respect to the old school guys. Anyone who blames them for not doing double backs must know that you shouldn't shit back onto the table where you ate.
-
@hummingfrog So doing more difficult skills with a bouncier floor makes it easier? These guys are hardcore, but so are we.

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Hmmm, not that impressive. I could do most of what he did when I was in high school in the 70's, and I wasn't even the best gymnast on our team. The bouncy floors they use today do make a huge difference though, and frankly I think they take something away from the sport.

@fplkp We have nice bouncy floors.

Beatiful!!

wow!! he doesnt look as short & stocky as gymnast today

what kind of floor is this on?
Me too. What a lot of people don't realize is that these guys were working without a "spring floor"
They tumbled on the hard ground. All through high school ('64-68) we did floor exercise on the bare floor of the basketball court! I didn't see a floor ex pad (1/2" felt over hardwood) until my first year of college.
Today's gymnasts are bigger and stronger, but those guys from the old days were plenty tough.

those guys bust their humps 5-6 days a week and have been training since they were kids, i think them wanting to win a medal is justified
