After the closing of Tompkins Square Park after the Memorial Day 1991 riot the homeless people from the park moved to an open plot of land on East 8th Street soon named "Dinkinsville." On October 15, 1991 as police massed to evict the encampment a fire flashed and burned down the shacks and tents that had been built. Monica Shay using the name "Catherine" spoke with me for WBAI as the fire burned.
Monica Shay had a long range vision and a political understanding that motivated her courageous and constant activism.
