Yes you did hear. But here it is not meant as the "The Song of the Germans". The melody of the German national anthem (adopted by the Weimar Republic in 1922) was composed by Haydn in 1797 to provide music to the poem "God save Franz the Emperor". It became the official anthem of the emperor of the Austrian Empire and the subsequent Austria-Hungary until the end of the Austrian monarchy in 1918.
