Citizens can hold police accountable in the palms of their hands with "Police Tape," a smartphone application from the ACLU of New Jersey that allows people to securely record and store interactions with police, as well as provide legal information about citizens' rights when interacting with the police. Thanks to the generosity of app developer OpenWatch, the ACLU-NJ is providing Police Tape to the public free of charge.

Have you guys worked with other chapters on making this app more applicable across the US? For example using the geo location features on a phone to determine the current state a user is in, upload video to local chapters server, have local chapter review it, and most importantly the rights in state you are in?

Good question! Other ACLU affiliates like the NYCLU have made a police accountability app similar to ours but the law regarding second party recording varies from state to state. If you are curious about recording public police interactions in another state, please contact that state's ACLU affiliate to inquire about the law.

I read that there isn't an app for the iPhone yet & that it's possible that the Apple Store may not be as cooperative in offering it to the masses as Android is. How soon can the iPhone users expect to have a downloadable version? Seems to me that Apple would in someway be denying a " Freedom of Speech" right, if they refuse to offer the app. On the other hand, it is their store & they probably have a right to offer or deny what they want. But wait! Why can't I shop for & download apps from

No, you should definitely check with your local ACLU affiliate to see how your State interprets the law.

You are correct about being careful. Be careful to read the entire statute for the state involved. Most of them have a clause stating that the exception to that is if it takes place in a public place where there is no expectation of privacy. Most people forget to read that far.

well maybe, if that is your concern. But if I were you, i would disconnect from any corporate controlled communication device during such activities.

Exactly, that way if you are using or selling drugs, paying for a transgender prostitute, or just out victimizing people, it doesn't
