An AVI of Saturn taken on the 04-12-2007 from my front yard.

Taken with my 10" F5 Newtonian on an EQ6 telescope. A Panasonic video camera was held afocally to a 26mm 2" eyepiece.

  • What was the total magnification taken? Or just the eyepiece magnification?

  • The total eyepiece magnification was about 96X, which was brought up to about 960X with optical zoom on the camera.

  • That was awesome. I wonder though why does the hue or color of Saturn seem to change throughout the video?

  • I never noticed that before - it seems to be pretty subtle. I think that was probably just the camera trying to auto-adjust the hue settings though.

  • man i have no idea what telescope to get im just an amateur admirer of space..not into photography or anything. but tonight was a lunar eclipse and Saturn was right by it, and even just seeing a small glimpse of the planet and the rings was a historical event to me. so what im asking is, what is a good telescope without breaking past 1000 bucks.

  • Hi, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the lunar eclipse and Saturn. Both are fantastic views.

As for a telescope, the one I use (a 10" Dobsonian) is under $1000 Australian. You should be able to find a similar telescope at some local telescope shops or online.
