You are missing a MAJOR point here. Controversial things are fun. It's fun to mock religion (like a comedian from my country said: it's very important to respect other people's beliefs, but it's even more important to call stupidity by its name"). How boring do you think a controversy-free world would be? There would be no satire or in fact nothing that could even slightly offend anyone.

It isn't about "Being an asshole" if you took the 5 minutes to google the event or to look at the facebook page you would know that it's about not being afraid of religious fanatics and letting them know, that we will do what we want in our country. Let them know that they do NOT control us, or what we do. We respect them, we just will not tolerate their threats. And drawing muhammad is a lot better way of showing that than by picking up a gun. The art of cartooning is subversive. Mohammed has been responsible (directly and indirectly) for endless atrocities. Once you start setting boundaries as to what's right and what's wrong, where does it end? Something like a drawing only has as much power as the viewer gives it.
