Episode 2 of the Channel Five series Kings & Queens, which looks at the life and reign of Henry II of England.
The series looks at key monarchs in the history of England and gives some simplified facts about their reigns. This is a good series for those who have little prior knowledge of English history.
You can find your modern Beckets among the bishops who protected and shuffled about the child molesters, because, after all, priests should not be subject to the laws of anything but the church.

@WinefrideofWales hehe i know i was just speaking sarcastically how the catholic church evolved from single rule to not being able to handle it alone and appointing more staff as it were and repeating it so the religious empire it had in its possession could be maintained ^^

@philessexuk No, the bishop has now and always has had in the Catholic Church, this authority. I was only pointing out the narrators error in regards to this fact.

@WinefrideofWales convenient how religion evolves to suit the few ^^

"Without the permission of the Pope, Thomas Becket excommunicated the King and the nobility" Actually - a Catholic Bishop or Archbishop does not need the Pope's permission. St. Thomas Becket was acting within the powers he had to do so.

@DawkinsForWeAreMany Beckett was pretty much screwed once he started with the ego trips. Both of them suffered from them.
