Definitive and original version of this groovy song, Billy Joe's blue eyed soul at its nifty best.
The anemic hit version by the Osmonds, for Tiger Beat set of the the early 70s, pales by comparison.

First time i have heard of Billy joe or this song.I think it is fantstic.A northern soul type of sound.

I shunned the Osmonds version as kid, then heard it again as an adult and thought it wasn't such a bad song. Then I heard this Billy Joe version, and the song really came to life! Absolute 60s pop, pure and lovely.

@garageband66 The 60's artist I could have seen recording "Yo-yo" and making a hit out of it would have to be Atlantic records' Wilson Pickett. Doesn't it have a Pickett quality to it?

This sounds like "Ain't That Peculiar?" played sideways.

Love the Osmonds, but THIS is the definitive version. . .

I'm beginning to like this Youtube music jukebox that gives good info and I now found out that Joe South wrote the song Yo-Yo that the Osmonds had a hit version four years after Billy Joe Royal had done the original version.which I like more than the Osmonds.

Much better than the Osmond Brothers.

I always liked "Down by the Lazy River" and it's probably my favorite Osmond's tune. Never cared that much for their "Yo-Yo" version, it sounded a little to over-produced like those "Mike Curb" productions of the early 70's.

I had heard that Joe South (one of my favorite singer/songwriters) wrote the Osmonds' hit "Yo-Yo", but I had not confirmed this. Thanks for this information.

I was amazed at how different this sounds.

From Anna,
Hi Garageband, It sounds Osmonds song on fast speed. Like their version better. Neat to hear though.

The more I hear this version, I could see a Marvin Gay or Smokey Robinson version of this too. I'm sure Joe South was trying to capture that sound when he wrote it.
