can you camp anywhere along the Suwannee, as long as it isn't private property, or do you have to use those camps?

You can camp pretty much anywhere you like, as long as it's not private property, just as you say. You might want to call the SR Management District at 386-362-1001 and they can issue you a free camping permit. If I remember correctly they can also mail you maps, etc, with details on what land they manage.
