Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton joined Principal Robert Matheson, teachers, and students for a ribbon cutting at the new Wake-NC State STEM Early College High School today.
In 2003, Lt. Governor Dalton authored the Innovative Schools Act, which established the state's early college high schools. Dalton led the effort to create the Joining Our Business and Schools (JOBS) Commission, which is working to more closely align high schools with higher education and business partners. The Wake-N.C. State STEM ECHS is a pilot program recommended by the JOBS Commission's report.
The Wake-N.C. State STEM ECHS is a joint project between the Wake County Public School System, NC State University, and the NC New Schools Project. The school will allow students to earn both a high school diploma and up to two years of college credit at N.C. State University at the conclusion of their five year program. The school will work with area engineering and energy firms to help students develop skills in these crucial industries.
