The answer is right after 2:39. The winds in the Indian Ocean travel northeast for half of the year and southwest for the other. To reach Australia you'd have to travel perpendicular to the wind, which wasn't particularly easy for the ships used at the time.

This may sound dumb, but the map at 2:39 begs a question. Did any of these traders ever make it to Western Australia? Was there simply not the need to trade with the indigenous tribes at the time? or did currents keep the boats away?
