Auki Town was established by the British in 1903 on the Island of Malaita. It was the district centre for the Malaita District and the District Commissioner was based on Auki. He once a year travel around the island on small vessels visiting the local villages.

Until today, Auki Town still remain a relatively small town, with most of the development centered on Honiara. The small businesses that operate in Auki Town face a lot of difficulties after the 2000 crises where local millitants return from Honiara and destroy some of the businesses. At the moment the town is trying hard to develop its infrastructure and move on from the damages after 2000.
