It was a mistake- not Israeli mistake - but AMERICAN mistake. American officials had told Israelis that this ship was located in the "far east" only a few days before the 6 days war in 1967. It was an intelligence ship, so the American didn't want others to know where it's located ... in retrospect, this was a mistake (of the USA) that costed the lives of many Americans. Israel had no idea of course that this could be an American ship, and was in the middle of a war with 4 coutries at that time.
