Miwako Sakabayashi has been a devoted student of abacus since she was a child. In the Japanese way, a youthful Ms. Sakabayashi attended abacus lessons five nights a week, all year around, for five years. At age 12 she took third place in Japan's National Abacus Competition. As an adult, her accomplishments in math garnered her a prestigious position in Japan's banking industry. She launched JAMS five years ago in her home. Because of its rapid growth and success, she has had to move the business to its own location in Beaverton.
