Polyphenols are powerful natural nutrients that act as antioxidants, protecting against the attacks of free radicals in the body. The presence of an excess of these free radicals, which are highly unstable molecules which can cause widespread damage throughout the body, is triggered by stress, pollution, direct exposure to sunlight, an unbalanced diet, smoking, and other factors.

  • I love Life Extension products, but your music leaves much to be desired! May I offer my services for your videos??

  • As much as I love LEF, they are clearly behind on studies showing that a low fat diet is substantially more pro-aging than a high fat diet. In this video the doctor erroneously says we should avoid the fats in chocolate, when in fact those cocoa butter fats are healthy.

Perhaps LEF can reference even one study showing that natural saturated fat is harmful. Because I can show dozens proving that saturated fats (including from animals) improves ALL lipid markers and reduces inflammation.

  • @1DukeNukem I pretty much agree with what you say but I have not found animal fat to reduce inflammation - all I tend to notice is bloody aches and pains especially with bacon! :-)

  • @NewYorkJennifer Life Extension agrees with you that carbohydrates, especially refined sugars, are the American diet culprit. Check out our article at lef.org/magazine/mag2005/jul2005_report_diabetes_01.htm

  • If you lose weight (lose fat) you are processing your OWN fat, a decent percentage of which is saturated. So how on earth can fat in the diet, a percentage of which is saturated, be bad for you? It's part of the very fuel your body stores.

As far as insulin release, if you throw the carbs out of your diet you will be 100 times better off than if you throw out the saturated fat and instead eat fructose laden fruits and breads, pasta, etc.

LEF needs to get on the bandwagon is right!

  • You may read work of Dr Barry Sears, PDh in biochemistry and lipids expert

  • Could you please cite your references? It would be interesting to read them.

  • From what I understand is that it's okay to eat an ounce of dark chocolate a day, just as long as the rest of your diet is perfect. So on days that I cheat... like say if I go get a Big Mac (which is quite rare nowadays), I will not eat my dark chocolate.

Also, there are three types of fats in dark chocolate: Oleic acid is a healthy fat which is also found in olive oil; the other two fats are stearic acid and palmitic acid (both are saturated). Stearic acid has no effect on cholesterol.

  • Satured fats, natural or not, promotes insulin release, which is a key inflammation factor. A few nutriotinists believe now that saturated fats can be healthy, personally I think not. Healthy fats are monounsaturated fats and Omega 3.

So I take very dark chocolate, but in fact its fat is not so healthy
