The Redhead duck is a fairly rare duck that had been hunted to dangerously low numbers. While they are making a comeback, they are still one of the less commonly seen ducks. They are very similar in appearance to their close and much more abundant relative the Canvasback duck.
Redhead ducks are normally found in the western regions of Canada and the US, however they tend to winter more on the east coast with the great lakes region being the furthest north in their winter range.

  • Thank you for the id. It was the bill colour and head shape that made me think that it wasn't a canvasback, but I think that you are right about it being a cross. Sorry about the miss ID

  • I agree. The female is a hen canvasback. But the drake I still think is a redhead. Possibly a mix but I think redhead

  • More precisely, the female is a Canvasback, and the male is a possible Canvasback x Redhead cross, as shown by the bill color, dark forehead and crown, head shape, intermediate back color, etc.

  • You realize those are Canvasbacks, not Redheads, right?
